Lake Barkley

ADVERTISEMENT - Visit Lake Barkley
Lake Barkley was built on the Cumberland River by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1966. The lake is 134 miles long with 1004 miles of shoreline at full summer pool of 359 feet and covers 57,900 acres. The lake was named after Alben W. Barkley, the 35th Vice President of the United States. Barkley dam which is 10,180 feet long and 157 feet high was tested by record lake levels of 372.5 feet on May 4th, 2011. Lake Barkley is full of largemouth and smallmouth bass, crappie, stripped bass, redear and catfish. The lake plays host to many fishing tournaments like the FLW Tour, Wal-Mart BFL Series, Bassmaster Week-end Series, and U.S.A. Bassin Series to mention a few. Most bass tournaments on the lake take over 20 pounds to win because of the abundance of fish in the lake. Lake Barkley is joined with Kentucky Lake with a man-made free-flowing canal. Lake Barkley today is home to many campgrounds, resorts, and lots of lake recreation.
